About Probiotics

Probiotic literally means "for life". Probiotics are: 'Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host' according to the currently adopted definition by the World Health Organization (WHO). Research has suggested that regular consumption of probiotic bacteria can help reduce the risk of certain gastro-intestinal illnesses, assist lactose intolerant people with lactose digestion and enhance the immune function.

Probiotics have been used for centuries as natural components in health-promoting foods such as yogurt. Many factors in our modern lifestyle, such as age, stress, diet, alcohol and antibiotic medications, contribute to an imbalanced microflora in the Gastro Intestinal Tract (GIT).

Probiotic bacterial cultures help restore the balance of 'good' bacteria in the GIT. There are over 500 bacterial species in the GIT, with an estimated population of 100,000,000,000,000 cells. These bacterial cells play a key role in digestion and in immune defence. Up to 80% of all immunoglobulin cells are regulated by the GIT bacteria. Therefore, it is important to maintain a favorable balance of 'good' bacteria for health and wellness.

Cheesewell's probiotic bacterial cultures are able to survive passage in the GIT, where they will adhere to the intestinal mucosa, and then inhibit or kill undesired bacteria through competition for 'food', production of organic acids and production of bacteriocins. Cheesewell cheese contains sufficient quantities (billions of cells per serving) of bacterial cells for probiotic effect. Up to 1 billion cells is the recommended daily dose trend.
